    A British company called San Paulo Gas is licensed by the Brazilian Empire (Decree 5071) to distribute piped gas for street lighting in the city of São Paulo.

    A Canadian company called Light takes over San Paulo Gas Co. Ltda.

  • 1959

    The company is nationalized and renamed Companhia Paulista de Serviços de Gás

  • 1968

    Under Municipal Law 7199 a joint stock company called Companhia Municipal de Gás (Comgás) is incorporated with the city government in control

  • 1974

    The name is changed again, this time to Companhia de Gás de São Paulo.

    Comgás is taken over by Companhia Energética de São Paulo (CESP), which manages it until privatization.

  • 1996

    IPO and trading in shares on Bovespa in 1997.

  • 1999

    Comgás is privatized for R$ 1.65 billion by a consortium. BG Group and Shell, the new controlling shareholders, are two of the world’s largest energy companies.

    Comgás is consolidated as the largest gas distributor in Brazil, accounting for over 30% of natural gas sales in the country.
